What is APKG?
π What is an APKG File?
APKG stands for Anki Package. It’s the file format used by Anki, a popular spaced repetition software, to store decks of flashcards. These files typically contain:
- Text-based flashcards (Q&A format)
- Deck metadata
- Media (optional)
π ️ How Are APKG Files Created?
APKG files are generated from templates using tools such as:
- Official Anki Desktop App
- Python libraries like
genanki - Web-based generators (like this one!)
The underlying structure includes SQLite databases, card models, and deck configurations. These ensure compatibility with Anki and other learning platforms.
π Why Use APKG Files?
APKG files are vital for:
- Medical/engineering/UPSC/IELTS prep using spaced repetition
- Language learning (vocabulary, kanji, grammar)
- Sharing decks among students or institutions
- Offline, personalized study
π₯ Tools to Open and Edit APKG
- Anki Desktop: Open-source and customizable
- AnkiMobile and AnkiDroid: Mobile apps for review
- Genanki: Python library to script deck creation
- AnkiWeb: Cloud sync and deck sharing
𧩠APKG Format Technical Details
An .apkg file is actually a ZIP archive containing:
- collection.anki2 (SQLite DB) - media/ (optional) - media.json (index of attachments)
Each card is linked to a model with formatting rules and field definitions. The SQLite structure ensures fast card search, deck management, and sync.
π Limitations
- Requires Anki or compatible apps to open
- Formatting errors in JSON can break deck creation
- Currently, no native support for images/videos in web-only APKG makers
π Future Upgrades Planned on This Website
- Real-time .apkg file generation with backend support
- Drag-and-drop card creator UI
- Media card support (image/audio)
